Users may experience crashes on Resilient File System (ReFS) enabled devices in Microsoft Defender Issue ID: DZ1041341 Affected services: Microsoft Defender XDR Status: Service degradation Issue type: Advisory Start time: Mar 11, 2025, 4:00 AM ADT User impact Users may experience crashes on ReFS enabled devices in Microsoft Defender. More info This impact is sporadic and may be causing a system failure on ReFS enabled devices on the latest update. To resolve impact in the meantime, we recommend for all devices with ReFS enabled, to revert back to the previous update, and not utilize the KB5053602 or KB5053603 updates. Scope of impact Any user may be affected by this event and experience crashes on ReFS enabled devices. Root cause A recent update to the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint service contained a code issue that affects ReFS enabled devices, leading to impact. Current status Mar 25, 2025, 10:48 PM ADT We were alerted to this issue internally and upon investigation, we identified a recent update to the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint service contained a code issue that affects ReFS enabled devices, leading to impact. We recommend any users with ReFS enabled to not download the affected KB5053602 or KB5053603 updates, and revert back to the previous update version. In addition, we're working on a code change to help dramatically lower the occurrence of this issue while we also work on a long-term fix solution set to release in the next major update.
